Gabriel Muresan, Former Romania International and Cluj Star, Dies at 44

Gabriel Muresan, a respected figure in Romanian football and public service, passed away at the age of 44 on July 9, 2026. The former midfielder was reportedly swimming in a lake in Apold, a Transylvanian town where he held the mayoral office, when he was pulled from the water by firefighters. Despite immediate medical attention at a local hospital, efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Muresan's career on the pitch was marked by significant achievements, particularly during his tenure with CFR Cluj. From 2007 to 2013, he made 135 appearances for the club, contributing to three Romanian league titles in 2008, 2010, and 2012, alongside three domestic cup victories. His time with Cluj also saw him compete in three UEFA Champions League group-stage campaigns, facing prominent European clubs such as ChelseaTeam·Chelsea, Manchester UnitedTeam·Manchester United, and RomaTeam·Roma, gaining valuable experience at the highest level of club football.

Internationally, Gabriel Muresan earned nine caps for the Romanian national team between 2007 and 2011, representing his country in qualifiers for both the World Cup and the European Championship. He retired from professional football in 2017, transitioning into a new chapter of public service.

In 2020, Muresan was elected mayor of Apold, a role he embraced with dedication, winning re-election two years ago. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the football community and his local municipality.
