Former Champions League Midfielder Gabriel Muresan Dies at 44

Gabriel Muresan, the former Romania international and UEFA Champions LeagueCompetition·Champions League midfielder, has died at the age of 44 following an incident in Apold, Romania. Muresan was reportedly swimming when he was pulled from a lake in the Transylvanian town on July 9, 2026. Despite being rushed to the hospital, efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Muresan enjoyed a distinguished career, most notably as a central figure for CFR Cluj from 2007 to 2013. During his tenure with Cluj, he was instrumental in a period of significant success for the club, securing the Romanian Cup three times in 2008, 2009, and 2010. He also lifted the Romanian championship trophy on three occasions, in 2008, 2010, and 2012.

His performances at club level earned him recognition on the European stage, where he featured in three UEFA Champions LeagueCompetition·Champions League group-stage campaigns with CFR Cluj. These campaigns saw him compete against some of Europe's most prominent clubs, including ChelseaTeam·Chelsea, Manchester UnitedTeam·Manchester United, and RomaTeam·Roma, showcasing his talent on football's grandest club platform.

Beyond his club achievements, Gabriel Muresan also represented his country, earning nine caps for the Romanian national team between 2007 and 2011. Following his retirement from the sport, Muresan transitioned into public service, serving as the mayor of Apold since 2020. He was re-elected to the position in 2024, demonstrating his continued commitment to his community.

Apold's town hall also released an official statement, saying, "Today, we are all experiencing great pain. The statement added, "Our community will keep his memory alive, and will be grateful for everything he did for the people and for the Apold commune."
