Chelsea Women Embrace Māori Culture Ahead of Historic New Zealand Match

Chelsea FC Women have commenced their 2026 pre-season tour with a significant cultural immersion in New Zealand, engaging in a traditional Māori welcome ceremony, known as a pōwhiri, upon their arrival in Auckland. The ceremony, rich in symbolism and cultural meaning, was performed by Ngāti Whātua ŌrākeiTeam·Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the local tangata whenua, offering the ChelseaTeam·Chelsea contingent a profound introduction to the nation's heritage.

The team participated in a ceremonial call, speeches of welcome, and songs from their hosts, culminating in the hongi, a traditional Māori greeting where noses and foreheads are touched, symbolizing the joining of breath and life force. Defender Kadeisha Buchanan shared her enthusiastic impressions of the experience, highlighting the spiritual depth of the encounter.

"I absolutely loved it. I loved learning about the culture. Anything culture-wise and I'm in my element. It's nice being here. When you step into their home, you feel the spiritual power. This is their home of spirit and prayer," Kadeisha Buchanan stated. She further described the hongi as "cool, something different we're not used to" and "beautiful," emphasizing that "the whole thing was a lovely experience."

This cultural engagement precedes a historic friendly match for Chelsea FC Women against Auckland FC Women at Eden Park on August 8, 2026. The fixture is part of the New Zealand International Football Festival and marks a significant milestone as the first time a Women's Super League club will play a match in New Zealand, as well as ChelseaTeam·Chelsea's inaugural visit to the country.

The tour follows a notable 2025/26 season for Chelsea FC Women, where they finished third in the FA Women's Super League, with Manchester CityTeam·Manchester City securing the title. The team did claim silverware, winning the League Cup against Manchester UnitedTeam·Manchester United. Club legend Sam Kerr departed after six years, having equaled Fran Kirby's club goalscoring record in her final league game and becoming the second player to score 100 goals for ChelseaTeam·Chelsea Women. Millie Bright made her 300th ChelseaTeam·Chelsea appearance and set a new all-time WSL appearance record with her 211th game. Erin CuthbertPlayer·Erin Cuthbert also reached 300 appearances for the club, while Guro ReitenPlayer·Guro Reiten played her 200th game before her departure. The team also established a new club and competition record for the longest unbeaten streak in the WSL, extending to 34 matches without defeat.
